Pastor’s January Message

Dear Siblings in Christ,

Happy New Year! And happy new decade! I don’t know about you but I’m still finding it more than a little mind-boggling to think it’s 2020! It’s going to take me a while to get used to writing 2020 and to stop being so surprised every time I see 2020 on something.

I noticed in the last few months of 2019, as we were preparing to wrap up another year and the last decade, that there were all kinds of lists popping all over the place. Lists about the best books, movies, songs, and albums of the 2010s. Lists about fashion trends, Google searches, and new words in the 2010s. Lists about tweets, events, news stories, and moments from the 2010s. All kinds of lists, capturing moments, memories, highlights, and even the lows of the last ten years. These lists came to mind as I was thinking about this newsletter article so I decided, after reflecting on my own life in these last ten years, to write my own list; my top moments of the last ten years.

Travel opportunities: I was very fortunate to be able to take some incredible trips in the last ten years.

  1. Jan. 2010 Holden Village (A Lutheran renewal center in the Cascade Mountains) and Seattle
  2. Jan. 2013 Israel and Palestine (with my mom! This trip was life-changing. And I would go back in a heartbeat!)
  3. My first trip to Hawaii with my sister in January 2016, a much needed week away for both of us!
  4. Family vacation to Florida-Disney World and Universal Studios, and of course a day at the beach!
  5. A continuing education adventure with my mom to San Antonio for the Festival of Homiletics. A week of worship and lectures on preaching. And a little sightseeing too!

Life Milestones

  1. Graduated from seminary with my Master of Divinity degree in 2013
  2. Accepted my first call on June 23, 2013
  3. Became an aunt on June 26, 2013 (This is the best vocation of my life thus far. I love being an aunt! I just wish my nephew would quit growing up so fast!!)
  4. Got ordained on July 21, 2013
  5. Started my first call on August 1, 2013
  6. Rejoiced with my mom when she was ordained on May 23, 2015 (I got to preach at her ordination service, a daunting and incredible opportunity that remains a highlight of my preaching career!)
  7. Started the adoption process in March, 2017
  8. Accepted my second call on September 23, 2018
  9. Concluded my first call on November 3, 2018
  10. Started my second call on November 25, 2018

It was a busy decade to say the least! I went from full-time student to full-fledged pastor. I’ve learned so much about myself, who I am and who I want to be. As I look at those lists and think about all of the things that took place in between those highlights, I can see God at work, God guiding me, and supporting me along the way. I am so very thankful for all the life that I have lived in these last ten years, including the struggles, losses, and disappoints. And I am excited to see what God has in store for the next ten years.

In these early days of this new year and new decade I encourage and invite you to reflect on what these last ten years were like for you, to make your own top moments or highlights list. And to see where God was and is at work in your life and what God might have in store for you next. Blessings to you in this new year and new decade!

Your Sister in Christ,

~Pastor Megan
